In my mind, virtually nothing is too offensive to be part of a book, movie, play, or game. Stories shouldn’t be thought of in terms of right and wrong. I prefer to think in terms of “what we need more of in stories” and “what we don’t need more of in stories”.
Take movies. I believe we need more active female characters, minority representation, and subversive political satire. Those are elements that may yet inspire good ideas in the public. But that doesn’t mean a movie without them is doing wrong.
We don’t need more romanticized gun violence, transgender serial killers, or rape scenes. But that doesn’t mean a movie that includes those is wrong.
It’s not a story’s responsibility to contain good things and condemn bad things. Still, stories do impact society. They challenge, and they normalize. So, if you, a creator, want to inspire change: What could you include in your work, or exclude, for society’s benefit?
