JAGGED GREY

Desire, mutated

Desire is identity. We’re composed, in no small part, of the things we wish and long for. Whether we fulfill them or not, desires are staples of a sound human mind.

But we don’t always think of desire this way. We interpret it instead as a symptom of inadequacy. Rather than “that would be a nice thing to have”, we think “my life is incomplete without that thing, and I need to obtain it so I can stop feeling desire”. Desire mutates easily, from a healthy exercise in identity, into an unstable state of mind that only exists to eliminate itself.

Wishing for things doesn’t mean something is missing from you. It means something is there. Be proud of all your wishes, not only those that come true. There’s great joy in a fulfilled desire – but there’s also great beauty in being a longing creature.
