Perhaps ghosts are so pervasive in horror because they make definite the blurry line between body and spirit. They fascinate us because they characterize the soul. They do what we fear the soul would do if divorced from our physical form.
On the flip side, zombies have body but no spirit, and are similarly enduring horror characters.
Perhaps we’re frightened by that which recalls the mysterious duality of our being.
