In my worldview, morality is a construct. Right and wrong are fundamental to relationships and societies – they’re the standardization and application of our emotions – but they’re not properties of the universe. No being truly possesses rights or responsibilities; no action is objectively better or worse than another.
But if you twisted my arm and told me to name one good thing I think every person ought to do…it would be: Fight polarization.
Stay out of the mob. Look beyond labels and easy answers. Discuss the good aspects of things you dislike, and the bad aspects of things you like. Think about how your mind may alter how the world appears to you.
Now that you’ve let go of my arm, let me clarify that I still don’t think everyone has to do this. There’s no such thing, in my worldview, as a universal responsibility. But this is the only task I could see myself at least asking of every individual. There’s something comforting, humanitarian, about it – not too strict a commandment, but not too lenient so as to be meaningless. Perhaps you could help me ask around.
