JAGGED GREY

Dear straight man

Your attraction to women is a good thing. Not only is it vital to human propagation, it’s a vital part of you. Female closeness is one of your passions, and your manner of seeking it is uniquely yours. Only you like women in your particular way.

I’ll also go out on a limb and say that you’ve often felt lonely. So many women just aren’t interested. Rejection, disgust, indifference, their reactions can be downright wounding.

In many ways, male heterosexuality is constantly validated. The female body is sexualized in most media. Other sexual orientations are ridiculed and marginalized. Women are socially penalized for rejecting men who like them, or for calling out those advances that cross the line.

But, as is surely clear to you, this is aggressive and superficial validation of straight men. It helps no one but the corrupt. True validation is regrettably much rarer.

That’s what I’m trying to help correct with this post. Straight men ought to be reminded – not by sexy billboards, gay jokes, or the touting of friendzoning as a concept, but by kind words – that their straightness is beautiful. And to be consoled, because women’s disinterest is sometimes devastating.
